CBD oil CO2 extraction method
Generally, you can get CBD from the following cannabis plants:
Industrial hemp (hemp), also called hemp and hemp, has a THC content of <0.3% and does not show psychoactive;
Recreational marijuana (marijuana), that is, drug marijuana, with a THC content> 0.5%, will produce strong psychoactive and addictive properties;
Medical marijuana has a THC content between 0.3% and 0.5%, which has a medicinal tendency.
Reduce the content of THC
One of the prerequisites for extracting CBD from hemp plants is to reduce the content of THC as much as possible.
Therefore, the THC content must be controlled from the source, that is, hemp plants with as little THC content and as much CBD content as possible are selected, that is, industrial hemp.
So, how to extract CBD from industrial hemp? The current common methods include solvent extraction, supercritical CO2 extraction, olive oil extraction and so on.
Method for supercritical CO2 extraction of CBD oil
Extraction process is divided into four main stages.
Loading industrial hemp
In the first stage, the technician fills the industrial hemp into an extraction vessel (a large metal tube). In order to be able to load as much industrial hemp as possible, the industrial hemp is usually processed into finer particles in advance. The finer particles also increase the surface area, allowing the solvent to gather more effective substances.
CO2 exceeds the critical point
After the industrial hemp was filled, the technicians continued to change the settings of the extraction machine to release liquid carbon dioxide into the machine’s accumulator. By increasing the temperature and pressure of this part of the extractor, the liquid carbon dioxide is under the condition that it exceeds the critical point and enters the supercritical state.
Supercritical CO2 injection into industrial hemp
Then, the supercritical carbon dioxide leaves the accumulator and enters the extraction vessel, the tube containing the processed industrial hemp.
Due to the properties of gas, carbon dioxide will squeeze through the smallest gaps between plant matter. With the characteristics of liquid solvents, it can absorb precious molecules such as THC and CBD, as well as terpenes such as α-pinene and myrcene.
After the supercritical carbon dioxide passes through the extraction vessel and absorbs cannabinoids and terpenes, it enters the separator through a tube at the bottom of the vessel. Changes in temperature and pressure separate cannabinoids from carbon dioxide and form oil. The lower-density carbon dioxide passes through the top of the separator and becomes liquid again, ready for another operation in the future. A major feature of this closed-loop system is that the carbon dioxide is recovered after extraction without causing waste.
The final product composition largely depends on the industrial hemp raw materials used: flowers with high THC content will produce THC extracts with psychoactive effects, while flowers with high CBD content will produce CBD extracts with no psychoactive effects.
