The CO2 essential oil extraction equipment is normally equipped with: 2 to 3 or up to 6 extractors, 2 to 3 separation containers, and in special cases, a CO2 fractionation system (rectification column) will be equipped at the same time for special process extraction, such as countercurrent extraction of capsanthin; Or to separate unwanted substances like waxes, chlorophyll.

The extraction solvent is carbon dioxide(CO2 gas), and the working medium (CO2 gas) can be recycled. The pressure and temperature of the extraction vessels and the separation vessels are automatically controlled and can realize computer remote monitoring, record storage, and report printing of process parameters; the extraction vessels work alternately or independently, and the extraction vessel top seals are a clamp-type pneumatic quick-opening structure.

The inner walls, pipes, and fittings of the essential CO2 oil extractor in contact with the material and the circulating water jacket are made of 304 (standard) or 316 (customized) stainless steel material with acid and alkali resistance that is suitable for food hygiene and GMP requirements.

Essential oil CO2 extraction process

The density of CO2 under high pressure and low temperature is close to that of liquid while retaining some of the properties of ordinary gas. It is called “supercritical CO2 fluid”, which has the strong dissolving ability.

The supercritical carbon dioxide extraction method enables the extraction of essential oils at room temperature without using solvents harmful to the human body, and can better protect the natural activity of the product. It is a more advanced “green separation technology”.

The whole CO2 extraction process is carried out at a low temperature, and the essential oil is dissolved from the plant under very high pressure, so the fragrance is not affected by heat. Due to the short extraction time, no chemical solvent is involved in the extraction, and the essence has no chemical reaction.

10 steps of supercritical CO2 extraction of essential oils?

  1. Load extraction vessel with biomass.
  2. Bring each vessel to working pressure using CO2 from supply cylinders.
  3. Create supercritical CO2 fluid.
  4. Alter pressure and temperature, depending on what’s being extracted and the goals of the extraction.
  5. Pass the supercritical CO2 through an extractor containing the plant matter itself.
  6. In Extraction Vessel, compounds are pulled from biomass into solution.
  7. Solvent (CO2) is boiled out of solution in Separator 1.
  8. Evaporated CO2 is condensed into liquid and stored in Accumulator.
  9. Pass the new solution through a separator to quickly and easily remove (and recycle!) the liquid CO2.
  10. After the allotted run time, the system is depressurized by releasing CO2 through Separator 2 or 3. (Popular CO2 machines are often equipped with 3 separators: Waxes separation and Light oil separation in 1st separator. Light oil separation in 2nd separator. To trap lightest and volatile compounds in 3rd separator.)
